The Great Beyond
When I was in high school I wrote a poem called The Great Beyond. I have no idea what that poem was about now nor even where it may be located. It is the title that has come back to me today. This may sound a little cliched to all the vedantins out there, but the great beyond is our origin. It is beyond duality.
As I sat contemplating health and disease, life and death, happiness and sorrow, good and evil, and a few other pairs of opposites I began to see that people (myself included) typically like to avoid one of these while emphasizing the other. The problem here is that the pairs of opposites are not separate. One does not exist without the other…
So to go beyond one, one has to go beyond both. Then there is freedom from compulsion to attain either.
To go beyond death we must go beyond life.
To go beyond disease we must go beyond health.
To go beyond poverty we must go beyond wealth.
To go beyond evil we must go beyond good.
etc.
etc.
The more we go beyond, the clearer we can see the true nature of existence. (I believe this even includes, going beyond the need to go beyond.)
